	The results were astounding. The gun experienced zero parts breakage whatsoever There were a few stoppages, but those were all determined to have been caused by user error such as inadvertently making contact with the slide release and even one time when a round was inserted backwards into the magazine.
	I know of no other documented single handgun test of that magnitude, let alone one with such stellar performance. Needless to say, the gun can be trusted.
	One concern that people have with semi-auto pistols in close-quarters defensive situations is the possibility that the gun can come out of battery when pressed directly against an assailant. This renders the gun inoperable and of no use to stop a bad situation. To solve this problem, the Hellcat is outfitted with a special muzzle standoff device that prevents the gun from coming out of battery even when pressed against someone. This means that you can defend yourself with a Hellcat no matter how up close and personal the situation may be.
	The Hellcat is outfitted with a hammer forged barrel, a recontoured Gen 2 trigger for better ergonomics, and a loaded chamber indicator. The guns are available in

	How to Remove and Install AR-15 Stock
	If your AR-15 is equipped with a stock and buffer that has an adjustable length of pull, removal is super simple. Instead of pushing up on the lever that you use to change the length of pull, you pull down on the same lever and slide the entire stock off of the&nbsp;
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/search?q=buffer+tube">buffer tube</a>. To install a new stock, simply pull down on the lever and slide it onto the buffer tube.
	If your AR-15 has a fixed&nbsp;

All About AR-15 Stocks

There’s just something about a rifle chambered in .308 Winchester. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bolt-action or a semi-auto, they just instill a bit of confidence in you as a shooter that some other calibers lack.
	With that in mind, we’re going to take a look at a couple different kinds of .308 rifles, both from 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/firearms?brands=ruger">Ruger</a>, with one being an incredibly adaptive <a href="https://www.deguns.net/bolt-action-rifles">bolt-action rifle</a> and the other being a revolutionary <a href="https://www.deguns.net/semi-automatic-rifles">semi-automatic rifle</a>.
	Ruger American .308 Rifle
	Introduced in 2011, the Ruger American line of bolt-action rifles set out to stake their reputation on four key elements: reliability, versatility, performance, and affordability. More than a decade later, the gun’s popularity and sales speak for themselves.
	In terms of reliability, these .308 rifles utilize a cold hammer-forged barrel combined with ultra-precise rifling that provides exceptional accuracy and longevity, meaning that you’ll likely tire of shooting this gun before you can wear it out. Ruger also equipped the gun with a one-piece, three-lug bolt with 70° throw that allows for excellent scope clearance.
	When it comes to versatility, the

A variety of different versions of the American model in .308 Winchester means that there’s a Ruger American for any application. 	For performance, all Ruger American rifles in

	Of course, none of these features mean much of anything if the gun is too expensive. The different Ruger American models have MSRPs that range from $599 to just $1,019 with street prices

	The new Generation II of the Ruger American .308 rifles also has a new model: the Ranch model has a 16.10” threaded barrel with a radial ported muzzle brake and an FDE stock.

	Big, heavy, and expensive. Those are three words no one wants to associate with a gun, especially an AR-style gun - but that is all too often the case when chambering this platform for a larger cartridge like the .308 Winchester. This usually involves a bump up in size from the smaller AR-15 platform to the larger AR-10 platform, but that’s not what you get with this .308 semi-auto rifle from Ruger.

	The 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/ruger-5610-sfar-308-winchester-ar-10-semi-automatic-rifle">Ruger Small-Frame Autoloading Rifle</a>, or SFAR, set out to create a rifle chambered for .308 Winchester that was more similar in size to a gun chambered for 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington. In short, it was not big, heavy, or expensive. Externally, the magwell is the only visual giveaway that this isn’t a standard AR-15 firearm.

	All of the other aspects are similar in size to that of an AR-15 and not the larger AR-10. For example, the Ruger AR-556 weighs 6.7 pounds and the SFAR weighs just 6.8 pounds. With the stock extended, the SFAR is 37.25”, which is only 1.75” longer than the AR-556.
	Made from a 7075-T6 hard-coat anodized aluminum forging, the upper receiver has all of the features you expect in an AR: a brass deflector, forward assist, and full-length Picatinny rail. The lower receiver has a nicely flared mag well to facilitate quick and easy magazine changes.

	Based in Turkey, CANiK has been in the aerospace defense industry for decades, but they’re a relative newcomer to the firearms world, hitting the 15-year mark in 2024. While some are quick to dismiss Turkish guns as being imported junk, they’d be much better served by taking a look at the arms industry as a whole and seeing just how many solid firearms exist on the American market that are actually imported - many of which come from Turkey, just like CANiK.
	Despite their young age, CANiK and the pistols they produce have proven incredibly popular both at home in Turkey and abroad here in the United States.
	Through a partnership with 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/search?q=century+arms&brands=century-international-arms">Century Arms</a>, CANiK began importing their TP series pistols into the United States in 2012. It didn’t take long for them to get noticed here, and they’ve developed a bit of a cult following.
	By far, their most impressive feat is pulling off a collaboration with one of the biggest names in the arms industry right now: Taran Butler of Taran Tactical Innovations. The two teamed up to release a pistol called the

CANiK: Where Aerospace Technology Meets Handgun Engineering

<a href="https://www.deguns.net/self-defense">Self defense</a> doesn’t have to be deadly. There are plenty of ways to de-escalate a situation and defend yourself with things that do not result in the loss of life. Resorting to deadly force should be a last ditch effort, and you should definitely carry a gun in case you find yourself in that kind of unfortunate situation.
	However, there may be times or places where you are not able to carry a gun or use one for self defense. In those instances, one of the many less lethal products on the market would be a good thing to have on hand.

	Pepper Spray and Mace
	By far, the most common less lethal weapon on the market is 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/search?q=pepper+spray">pepper spray</a>. Often, people use the terms “pepper spray” and “mace” interchangeably, but they’re actually two different things. For starters, mace is a chemical irritant that operates similar to tear gas. It has been proven to be ineffective when used against assailants who were under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
	On the other hand, pepper spray is an inflammatory agent that causes instantaneous inflammation that impacts the eyes and skin and is not counteracted by drugs or alcohol. This inflammatory response leads to difficulty breathing, intense pain, temporary blindness, nausea, and sometimes even vomiting. While incredibly unpleasant for the person on the receiving end, it is not lethal.
	Traditional mace dates to the 1960s and it has been withdrawn from the market. The term continues to be used interchangeably with pepper spray because 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/brands/mace-brand">Mace</a> (notice the capital M) is also a brand name that sells pepper spray.
	Pepper spray comes in all shapes and sizes. There are small ones that can fit on a 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/mace-mini-black-keychain-pepper-spray-80810">keychain</a> or in your <a href="https://www.deguns.net/mace-pocket-black-pepper-spray-80745">pocket</a>; there are large ones that are designed to be worn on your belt when in dangerous places or in the presence of <a href="https://www.deguns.net/udap-sog-bear-self-defense-pepper-spray">dangerous animals</a> (not to kick up the “man vs bear” thing again); there are also ones designed to blend in and look like <a href="https://www.deguns.net/sabre-ls22us-pink-lipstick-pepper-spray-oc-pepper-10-ft-range">lipstick tubes</a> - just don’t mix them up!

	Stun Guns
	Electricity is an effective, less lethal deterrent. Yes, people can die from being electrocuted, but that’s because they’re coming into contact with a level of electricity that was not meant for human contact. 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/search?q=stun+gun">Stun guns</a>, on the other hand, are not lethal at all because they administer an electric shock that is high voltage and low current.
	A stun gun is designed for close contact situations where you are within touching distance of a dangerous person. Unlike a Taser, which can shoot electric prongs into someone, a stun gun requires you to actually touch the person with it in order for the electric shock to be administered.
	The shock is strong and painful, but it is not long-lasting. You can use a stun gun to, well, stun your assailant and buy some time to put some distance between you and the dangerous person.
	Like pepper spray, stun guns come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes for all sorts of applications. There are 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/sabre-s1005bk-mini-stun-gun-3-lbs-black">traditional ones</a>, <a href="https://www.deguns.net/mace-80534-compact-stun-gun-black">compact ones</a>, <a href="https://www.deguns.net/sec-s1013gy-key-fob-stun-gun-gray">key fob ones</a>, and even <a href="https://www.deguns.net/sabre-s2000sfg-tactical-stun-gun-with-holster-amp-flashlight-1-82-million-green-120-lumen">combo ones</a> that put a flashlight and stun gun together in one unit.

	Rubber Bullets
	The use of rubber bullets can be a very effective way to deter and/or disable an assailant without actually killing them. First and foremost, though, it’s important for you as the user to always know what type of ammunition is loaded in your gun. Thinking you’re loaded up with rubber bullets when you actually have regular ammunition can have fatal consequences. That’s why many guns that are used for rubber bullets have brightly colored furniture on them or they’ve been painted a different color to ensure that these guns are only for use with less lethal ammo like rubber bullets.
	With that out of the way, let’s talk about the different types on the market. The first kind are loaded with more traditional shot found in shotgun shells, which can be anything from 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/sellier-bellot-12-gauge-2-rubber-spherical-ball-shot-shotgun-ammo">two large</a> rubber balls to <a href="https://www.deguns.net/sellier-bellot-shotgun-12-gauge-2-75-2-11-16-oz-15-rubber-pellets-shot-25-rounds-per-box-10-boxes-per-case-sb12rsa">15 smaller</a> rubber balls. There are also ones loaded with <a href="https://www.deguns.net/brenneke-sl122sdll-self-defense-12-gauge-2-75-1-3-oz-sabot-slug-shot-5-per-box-50-case">rubber slugs</a> and even ones that have <a href="https://www.deguns.net/byrna-technologies-ss61301-kinetic-less-lethal-12-gauge-1-40-0-15-oz-10-per-box">chemical irritants inside</a> of the rubber projectiles.

	Less Lethal Guns
	The term “less lethal gun” might sound like an oxymoron, but it isn’t. It’s also different from a gun that fires rubber bullets like the ones mentioned above. A perfect example is the 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/byrna-sd-launcher-kinetic-kit-tan-less-lethal-gun-self-defense-cartridges">Byrna SD Less Lethal Gun</a>, which is not capable of being loaded with or firing traditional ammunition of any kind.

	Utilizing compressed air (CO2) cartridges, the Byrna SD looks, feels, and operates very similarly to a regular handgun. However, this less lethal gun fires .68 caliber round kinetic or

	This particular gun has an ambidextrous safety, a trigger pull weight of just 6-8 pounds, and even has a picatinny rail for mounting a light and/or laser if you want to do so. The rounds it fires are loaded into a five-round magazine that fits into the grip just like a regular semi-automatic handgun. The

Less Lethal Guns and Other Self Defense Options

It may be hard to imagine, but there was a time when the future of the iconic 9mm Luger cartridge was in jeopardy. In fact, that same desire to eliminate the 9mm gave birth to the 5.7x28mm cartridge.
	Back in the late-1980s and early-1990s, NATO expressed desire to phase out the 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/9mm-ammo">9mm</a>. They favored a new cartridge to be used in pistols and personal defense weapons, or PDWs. At that time, they were looking to replace the aging 9mm with something that offered better terminal ballistics and penetration of <a href="https://www.deguns.net/body-armor">body armor</a>.
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/brands/fn-herstal">FN Herstal</a> responded by developing the 5.7x28mm, a bottleneck cartridge with a rebated rim, to meet the NATO specs and requirements of the day. While 5.7 ammo is similar in length to .22 Hornet and <a href="https://www.deguns.net/22-wmr-ammo">.22 WMR</a>, the ammo was developed from scratch and does not have a parent case on which it was based.

	New ammo means sweet new guns. Development from the ground up of this new 5.7 ammo also required new firearms, and FN Herstal responded with two: the Five-seveN pistol and the P90 PDW.
	However, FN Herstal wasn’t the only player in the ammo game. 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/brands/heckler-koch">Heckler & Koch</a> developed a 4.6x30mm cartridge to compete with FN’s 5.7x28mm cartridge. Early NATO tests in the 2000s of both cartridges resulted in the 5.7 barely coming out on top.
	The final report said that the 5.7 ammo was “slightly superior in the field of terminal ballistics” compared to the 4.6. As a result, the 4.6 design was shelved in favor of the 5.7's ability to penetrate.

	5.7 Ammo
	As you would expect from a 5.7mm bullet, it doesn’t weigh much, but despite the light weight, it packs some serious punch. The original design featured a 23-grain plastic-core bullet that clocked in at a screaming 2,800 feet per second. Blazing muzzle velocity creates greater range accuracy and terminal performance.
	This was discontinued in 1993 and replaced by a heavier 31-grain ammo that is moving at 2,350 feet per second. When fired from a P90, the 31-grain armor piercing variant can defeat a Level IIIA bulletproof vest out to a distance of 200 meters. When loaded with a 27-grain bullet, which is what FN’s factory 5.7 ammo uses, the 5.7 can reach speeds of up to 2,550 feet per second.
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/fiocchi-range-dynamics-subsonic-5-7x28mm-62-gr-full-metal-jacket-50-per-box">Subsonic 5.7 ammo</a> is also available, loaded with a 62-grain bullet that clocks in at just 1,050 feet per second.
	In 1993, the projectile’s length was shortened by 0.11” in an effort to standardize the ammo and make it easier to feed from the Five-seveN pistol that was in development at that time. It just made more sense to shorten 5.7 ammo across the board instead of having two different bullet lengths, one being optimized for the P90 and one for the Five-seveN.

	As of 2024, there are more than 40 different countries whose law enforcement, police, and military agencies all use at least one gun that is chambered in 5.7x28mm.
	When compared to the performance of 9mm Luger ammo, the 5.7 blows it out of the water. Aside from the fact that 5.7 ammo produces about 30% less felt recoil, it also has a much flatter trajectory. With a 50-yard zero, a 9mm will drop by almost 30” at 200 yards. In comparison, a 5.7 will drop by just 2.5” at the same distance.
	Cost, however, is where the 9mm wins out over the 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/57x28mm-nato-ammo">5.7x28mm</a>. The latter is considerably more expensive; we’re talking twice as much, at a minimum, and often more.

	5.7 for Self Defense
	There’s no middle of the road when it comes to opinions on the 5.7x28mm for self defense situations. People either love it or hate it with a passion. Proponents tout the large magazine capacity, which is a minimum of 20 rounds for all of the handguns on the market today.

	That makes it an industry leader in terms of capacity. However, the guns are all full-size firearms, meaning that they aren’t a viable option for concealment for everyone.
	One of the biggest concerns brought up by the anti-gun crowd is that the 5.7 was designed to defeat body armor. While this is true, it’s important to know that FN is the only company that makes armor piercing 5.7 ammo, and the company does not sell it to civilians.
	P90 PDW
	FN’s P90 debuted in 1990 as a compact weapon built in a bullpup configuration to keep size down. The gun’s overall length was just 19.9” and it weighed 5.8 pounds. As a submachine gun, it fires from a closed bolt and has a straight blowback operation.
	The 50-round detachable magazine mounts horizontally on top of the gun along the length of the receiver, which keeps the P90’s height down to 8.3” overall. The gun has a rate of fire of at least 850 rounds per minute, making the 50-round mags a necessity, as any smaller number would be insufficient given that rate of fire.
	Vehicle crews, special forces, counter-terrorist groups, protective details, SWAT teams, the US Secret Service, and similar law enforcement agencies have all been known to use the gun, as its small size and big firepower makes it an obvious choice for the situations that those users often find themselves in.
	PS90
	Unfortunately, civilians can’t get their hands on P90 submachine guns, so the 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/fn-ps90-standard-5-7x28mm">PS90</a> was created as a semi-automatic version in 2005. Aside from not being able to fire in full-auto, it is functionally the same gun as the P90 in all other aspects.
	You can shoot the PS90 with the P90’s 50-round magazines or 30-round mags. For those who are unfortunate enough to reside in a freedom-hating state, you can also get 10-round magazines for the PS90.
	While the PS90 transfers as a 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/57x28mm-rifles">semi-automatic rifle</a>, you could file paperwork with the ATF to cut down the barrel and make it into a short barrel rifle, or SBR, and then you’d have what is essentially a semi-auto P90.

	Five-seveN
	Introduced in 1998, the 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/fn-five-seven-mrd-5-7x28mm-pistol-20-1-fde">FN Five-seveN</a> was initially restricted to just military and law enforcement customers. In 2004, however, those restrictions were lifted and the gun has been available on the civilian market for 20 years now.

	Designed to be a full-size handgun, the Five-seveN has the same grip angle as the M1911. It has a 4.8” barrel, is 8.2” in overall length, and weighs 1.6 pounds when fully loaded. The gun is made with a polymer frame and while the slide appears to be made of polymer as well, it’s actually made of steel that’s been encased in polymer.

	Other 5.7 Firearms
	For quite some time, the FN Five-seveN was the only pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. In recent years, more companies have begun adding 5.7 guns to their lineup. The

Standard magazine capacity for these pistols is 20 rounds, 23 rounds, and 22 rounds, respectively.

The plain ol&rsquo; Taurus Judge is the one that started it all. The OG, if you will. At its core, the original Judge is a double-action/single-action revolver with a 3-inch barrel, fixed rear sight, and a fiber optic front sight.
The entire gun - frame, cylinder, and barrel - is built from steel. Despite being built on a compact frame, this is no pocket pistol.
The gun weighs 29 ounces empty and is 9.5&rdquo; long overall. It can fire either .45 Colt or .410 bore shotshells up to 2.5&rdquo; in length.&nbsp;A Magnum version is also available that allows you to chamber 3&rdquo; .410 bore shotshells for a little extra power.
It is perfect for a walk in the woods and provides excellent protection from snakes or other vermin you may find on the property.
The Judge is available in two finishes: matte black oxide and matte stainless steel. Black guns are made from an alloy steel and the stainless guns are made from - yep, you guessed it - stainless steel. Regardless of the finish, both guns come equipped with black synthetic grips. In addition to the standard 3-inch barrel, you can also get the Judge with a 6.5&rdquo; barrel. The extra 3.5&rdquo; in length brings the weight up to 32 ounces empty.
Taurus Judge Home Defender
When is a shotgun not a shotgun? When is a revolver not a revolver? When it&rsquo;s the Taurus Judge Home Defender. Outfitted with a 13-inch barrel, this gun uses a section of Picatinny rail for a rear sight (there&rsquo;s no front sight) that allows you to easily mount the optic of your choice on it.
Given that this gun is designed for home defense, a pistol red dot goes great on the gun. There&rsquo;s also a section of Picatinny rail on the bottom of the handguard where you could mount a <a href="https://www.deguns.net/weapon-lights">light</a> or a <a href="https://www.deguns.net/lasers">laser</a>.
The purpose of the longer barrel and handguard is to give you optimum control on the gun in a possible life or death situation. Taurus Judge Public Defender
The Public Defender model of the Taurus Judge is a bit more sleek than the regular Judge model. While it still weighs 29 ounces empty, the 2-inch barrel is an inch shorter than the original Judge and the overall length is 7.75&rdquo; instead of 9.5&rdquo; overall. It still fires .45 Colt or <a href="https://www.deguns.net/410-bore-ammo">.410 bore shotshells</a> up to 2.5&rdquo; in length.
While the size difference isn&rsquo;t huge, the reduction in barrel length makes the gun a little easier to carry. Since .410 shotshells aren&rsquo;t exactly designed for precision shooting and this gun is intended for more up-close applications, you don&rsquo;t have to concern yourself with accuracy or velocity loss that stems from the shorter barrel.
Like the original Judge, the Public Defender has a fiber optic front sight and a fixed rear sight.
There&rsquo;s also a Poly version of the gun, which comes with a frame that&rsquo;s finished in a black polymer. The barrel on the Judge Public Defender Poly is also longer: 2.5&rdquo; instead of the 2&rdquo; standard. It can also be had with a matte stainless finish on the cylinder. The weight difference between the Public Defender and the Public Defender Poly is just two ounces, with the former weighing 29 ounces and the latter weighing 27 ounces.

For all intents and purposes, the

The more nuanced history places the beginning of this design with a failed venture by Horace Smith &amp; Daniel Wesson in 1854. Their design was purchased by Oliver Winchester, who also acquired Henry’s design in 1866. Winchester hired other talented arms designers who perfected the lever action rifle concept and they launched the first Winchester rifle: the Model 1866, also known as the “Yellow Boy.”

Lever Action Rifle History and Modern Application

The Daniel Defense SOCOM-MK18 rifle started its life in development at Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division as the “close quarters battle receiver,” or CQBR. The goal was to provide optimum performance in tight spaces where maneuverability was of the utmost importance and the target engagement distance was generally going to be no more than 100 yards - and quite often much less.

	What is the Mk18?
	At its most basic, the Mk18 is an M4 with a short barrel - just 10.3” overall. 	What is a Clone Rifle?
	The clone rifle concept has become incredibly popular in recent years, and the Daniel Defense MK18 is just about as close to clone correct as you can get without drilling that third pin hole and risking a stay at Club Fed.
	The MK18 that Daniel Defense offers on the commercial market to civilians features the same railed forend Daniel Defense currently provides to USSOCOM (the Daniel Defense RIS II MK18), and a 10.3” cold hammer forged barrel outfitted with a Daniel Defense flash suppressor. The barrel itself is made of chrome moly vanadium steel with a 1:7 twist. It is chrome lined, MP tested, and has a milspec heavy phosphate coating.
	Running the gun is a carbine-length gas system with a Daniel Defense MK12 gas block, as well as an H buffer and a milspec, MP tested&nbsp;
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/bolt-carrier-group">bolt carrier group</a> with a staked gas key.
	The barrel and forend are mated with a milspec upper receiver with indexing marks and M4 feed ramps. The gun is a flattop, with the entire upper and forend lined with Picatinny rail for attachment of the shooter’s preferred sights,&nbsp;

	The lower receiver is also milspec and has an enhanced flared magazine well for easier and faster reloads as well as an integrated QD sling attachment point at the rear. The buttstock is Magpul MOE on a milspec buffer tube.

	To SBR or Not to SBR?
	While the MK18 barrel length of just 10.3” is of no legal issue to the USSOCOM members using it, there are some pesky legal restrictions when it comes to civilian use. Because the barrel is considerably shorter than the legally allowed length of 16”, it means that the gun is subject to the National Firearms Act (
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/nfa-guns">NFA</a>) and must be registered as a short barrel rifle, or SBR.
	Getting the Daniel Defense SOCOM-MK18 as an SBR is the most clone correct way to go, but it’s understandable that people may not want to deal with the added cost, wait time, and restrictions that come with owning an SBR. That’s why Daniel Defense has multiple options available.
	For starters, you can buy just the MK18 upper receiver and slap it on any already-registered SBR lower you may already have. Or, you can put it on an AR pistol lower of your choice that may be sitting in your safe waiting to be completed.

Go Clone Correct with the Daniel Defense SOCOM-MK18

A lot has changed since the first <a href="https://www.deguns.net/brands/glock" target="_blank">Glock pistols</a> were introduced more than 40 years ago. The world’s population has just about doubled since then. Gas was $1.22 per gallon; minimum wage was $3.35 per hour. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that people simply cannot stop talking about Glock pistols.
	When the company emerged in the 1980s, the guns were the talk of the town because of their innovative three-part Safe Action system and non-fiberglass reinforced polymer frame. Quite simply, no one had ever done anything like that before. There were early adopters who jumped aboard the bandwagon and saw the benefits of Glock’s design as the way of the future. Plenty more, however, were hesitant to embrace a “plastic gun.”
	With four decades of hindsight, we know that the guns aren’t plastic (the entire slide and barrel are metal), they’re easy to use, are incredibly reliable, and that striker-fired guns have eclipsed revolvers and single-action pistols.

	Glock 19
	Introduced a few years after the flagship Glock 17, the&nbsp;
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/glock-usa-made-g19-gen-5-mos-9mm-semi-automatic-handgun" target="_blank">Glock 19</a> is what they refer to as “the all-around talent” in the company’s lineup.
	Essentially just a more compact version of the Glock 17, the Glock 19 has a 4.02” barrel that’s about half an inch shorter and at 7.36” in length, is almost three-quarters of an inch shorter overall. Aside from that, they’re pretty much the same gun. The Glock 19 weighs 30.16 ounces with a loaded magazine, which holds 15 rounds of 9mm Luger ammo. That number has essentially become the benchmark for a standard capacity 9mm magazine.
	The Glock 19 has proven itself to be the industry standard when it comes to semi-automatic pistols used for law enforcement and concealed carry. A large number of law enforcement departments throughout the United States (and plenty of other countries, too) carry the Glock 19. Undoubtedly, more than any other semi-automatic pistol on the market today. If you ask a concealed carrier what they’re packing and they’re willing to answer you, I’d be willing to bet that a large portion of them have a Glock 19 in their holster. If they don’t currently, they probably have had one at some point in the past.

	Glock 17
	The&nbsp;

In an era dominated by steel revolvers and single-action pistols, the polymer-frame striker-fired Glock 17 was a bit of an odd duck, but it turned out to be an absolute gamechanger.
	Holding 17 rounds of 9mm Luger in the magazine, the Glock 17 is a full-size pistol. It has a 4.49” barrel, is 8.03” in overall length, and weighs 32.28 ounces with a full magazine. That’s a few ounces less than the weight of the most common unloaded revolvers of the day. Law enforcement officers would have to carry two extra speed loaders to equal the same capacity of just one Glock 17 magazine.
	Even though it’s considered a full-size pistol, plenty of people still carry a Glock 17 concealed every day - and they manage to do it comfortably.

	Glock 43X
	Models with an X in the name boast a combination of features from different models, but they are not always interchangeable. Things can get a bit confusing, but the key takeaway here is that Glock listened to their customers and built the gun that they wanted.
	The&nbsp;
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/glock-ux4350201-g43x-9mm-sub-compact-ccw-handgun" target="_blank">Glock 43X</a> is a slimmer, subcompact single-stack pistol that has a higher magazine capacity and a longer grip frame (similar to the Glock 48) that makes it easier to hold and shoot compared to some of the company’s previous offerings. The 43X is similar to the 43 except it has a longer and thicker grip to accommodate a single-stack magazine capacity of 10 rounds of 9mm Luger. The Glock 43 was designed as a slimline version of the subcompact Glock 26, with the former holding six rounds and the latter holding 10 rounds.
	Overall length of the Glock 43X is 6.50” with an overall height of just 5.04”, which makes for a nice, small pistol that doesn’t sacrifice capacity for comfort.

	Glock 26
	Essentially, Glock made the revolver back-up gun obsolete by introducing the subcompact&nbsp;
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/glock-g26-gen3-serrated-9mm-worn-flag-cerakote-sub-compact-semi-automatic-handgun" target="_blank">Glock 26</a>. Back-up guns were often small-frame, snub-nose revolvers, and the Glock 26 was designed to be similar in size and weight but with more firepower. Sporting a 3.43” barrel and coming in at just 4.17” tall and 1.26” wide, the Glock 26 weighs 25.75 ounces with a magazine loaded with 10 rounds of 9mm Luger.
	The result is a gun that has a barrel that’s at least 1” longer than a standard snub-nose revolver, which means better ballistics and accuracy, and standard capacity that is double that of the five- or six-shot revolvers it was designed to compete against.
	It’s safe to say that the subcompact revolution is complete, as I don’t know of any officer who still carries a snub-nose revolver for back-up. It’s just impossible to argue against the 10-round magazine capacity if you’re in a situation where you have to resort to the back-up gun.

	Glock 45
	The nomenclature used for Glock models can be a bit confusing. Case in point: the&nbsp;

Essentially, the Glock 45 marries a compact slide with a full-size frame to create a compact crossover pistol that can hold 17 rounds of 9mm Luger ammo.
	Equipped with a flared magazine well and front cocking serrations for easier reloads and better manipulation, these are features that the Glock 45 offered standard long before the newest Gen5 pistols incorporated them.

	The idea of adapting John Moses Browning’s

	Ergonomics


	Even though 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/semi-automatic-handguns?brands=glock">Glock pistols</a> and other polymer striker-fired pistols dominate the market, there are a number of shooters who simply cannot get on board with the design for one simple reason: ergonomics.


	For some people, the grip angle on a Glock and similar pistols doesn’t fit their hand properly, regardless of whether or not the frame has finger grooves molded into it. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the Glock’s grip angle - or those shooters’ hands, for that matter - it’s just that some guns simply don’t fit some people. In contrast, the 1911 is renowned for its comfortable grip angle and natural point of aim. A 1911 chambered in 9mm Luger requires no ergonomic modifications for proper function, so it retains all of the benefits of the tried-and-true platform that John Moses Browning created more than a century ago.


	Accuracy


	Widely praised for its crisp trigger due in large part to the single-action design, the 1911 offers many shooters a higher degree of accuracy than what they might be able to obtain in comparison to striker-fired pistols with trigger safeties.


	When paired with the relatively mild recoil of the 9mm cartridge in comparison to the .45 ACP cartridge, shooters can maintain better control and potentially achieve tighter groups, especially during rapid fire or follow-up shots.


	Ammo Cost


	Without a shadow of a doubt, ammo costs have gone up across the board in recent years. Even reloaders have felt the pain of the price increase, and it’s unlikely that the cost of anything ammo-related is going to come back down. More now than ever, shooters are taking a serious look at the cost per round when picking their ammo, and the simple fact is that

	In general, you’re going to pay double for .45 ACP compared to 9mm - and that’s just for basic target loads. When you step up to higher end self-defense loads, the cost disparity only increases. (Of course, when it comes to saving your life, the cost of ammo is of truly little consequence.)


	At its core, this means that practice sessions on the range are more affordable with a 1911 in 9mm, and when things are more affordable, you’re more likely to do them more frequently. More practice is always a good thing.

	Opponents of the 1911 tout the fact that you would have to carry a

A full-size 1911 in 9mm usually has a magazine capacity of nine rounds. While that’s certainly still less than the alternative, it’s at least better than .45 ACP.


	Plus, with the emergence of double-stack 1911s and 2011s, magazine capacity can be as many as 17 to 20 rounds of 9mm in a platform that stays true to the 1911 roots with little change in size or ergonomics.


	The Other Side


	Of course, there are drawbacks to 9mm 1911s. Here are two of the biggest ones:


	Weight


	While there are options on the market for polymer-frame 1911s, they are few and far between, so it’s more than likely that you’ll end up with a gun with a metal frame. The added weight of a steel-frame 1911 in 9mm Luger compared to a polymer pistol is going to be beneficial in terms of reducing felt recoil when shooting, but it’s also going to potentially increase fatigue and discomfort when carrying that gun for self-defense situations. If the gun is too heavy and uncomfortable, then you’re less likely to carry it, and a gun that you have for concealed carry that you don’t carry is useless.


	Magazine Capacity


	Wait a minute, wasn't the magazine capacity mentioned above as a benefit? Yes, but it’s also a drawback. Magazine capacity has long been one of the major sticking points when it comes to the 1911. Because it was originally designed to fire the .45 ACP, which is a physically larger cartridge than the 9mm Luger, its magazine capacity is limited. Factory magazines for 1911s in .45 ACP are usually only seven rounds in a single-stack magazine. In contrast, factory magazines for full-size pistols in 9mm are usually 15 rounds in a double-stack magazine.


	If you want to increase the carrying capacity afforded by a 
	<a href="https://www.deguns.net/girsan-witness2311-9mm-luger-double-stacked-1911-semi-automatic-handgun">double-stack</a> 1911 or a 2011, then you’re also going to increase the size and weight of the gun you’re carrying.


	Which is Right?

"Free-floating" is a term you hear all the time with firearms. Mentioned in virtually all rifle product descriptions these days, it is touted as a huge selling point. That's all well and good if you understand what is actually being said. Understanding the features of a gun you're looking to buy is important, so did you know that "free-floating" has a different meaning when dealing with the AR-15?<h2>Barrel vs Handguard</h2>
	Many people use the term "free-floating barrel," which is correct when discussing <a href="https://www.deguns.net/bolt-action-rifles">bolt-action rifles</a>. However, that's not the case with an <a href="https://www.deguns.net/ar15-rifles">AR-15</a>. In reality, the correct term is "free-floating handguard."
	People often mix them up or think that they can be used interchangeably, but that's not the case. They mean two different things when talking about an AR-15, and it's not just an issue of semantics.
	Why Isn't an AR-15 Barrel Free-Floating?
	The barrel on an AR-15 isn't free-floating because of the gas block. Because an AR-15 is a gas-operated firearm, it utilizes a gas block and a gas tube to cycle the action and prepare the gun to fire the next round. The gas block is mounted near the muzzle of the barrel, and it channels some of the gasses created when firing a round up into the gas block and back into the gas tube.
	The gas tube goes into the gas key on the <a href="https://www.deguns.net/bolt-carrier-group">bolt carrier group</a>, and the bolt carrier group is driven to the rear by the gas and pushed back forward again by the buffer spring. The connection between the gas key and the gas tube creates a point of contact for the barrel other than just the front of the receiver.
	While that contact might not be much in the grand scheme of things, it's enough to make it so that the barrel is not, in fact, free-floating.<h2>Free-Floating vs Drop-In Handguards</h2>
	Just as it sounds, <a href="https://www.deguns.net/handguards-and-rail-systems?q=float">a free-floating handguard</a> is one that does not make any contact with the barrel. Instead, it floats over and around the barrel. The only point of contact between the handguard and the rest of the gun is where it attaches to the front of the receiver.
	A free-floating handguard will cover the barrel, but it won't touch it. This type of <a href="https://www.deguns.net/handguards-and-rail-systems">handguard</a> is usually made from one solid piece of material.
	In contrast to a free-floating handguard, a drop-in handguard is usually made from two separate pieces of material. These two pieces join together and are held in place via tension exerted from the delta ring at the front of the receiver and rear of the barrel. A drop-in handguard makes contact with the front of the receiver as well as on the barrel closer to the muzzle. This extra point of contact can impact the way your gun shoots.<h2>Benefits of Free-Floating Handguards</h2>
	The AR platform is sometimes jokingly referred to as "LEGOs for adults" because of the ease with which you can attach accessories to it.
	When you add things like a <a href="https://www.deguns.net/bi-pods-and-mono-pods">bipod</a>, <a href="https://www.deguns.net/weapon-lights">weapon-mounted light</a>, <a href="https://www.deguns.net/lasers">laser unit</a>, or any other kind of accessory to the handguard, you're adding weight to the overall firearm in a way that isn't balanced because they're mounted on the front half of the gun. If those items are added to a free-floating handguard, then you don't have to worry about the weight impacting how your barrel performs.
	While the items themselves may not weigh all that much, if they are mounted to a drop-in handguard, they will have a direct impact on your barrel by adding extra stress to it. That additional stress can change your point of impact, which means that you may need to sight your AR-15 in again depending on what accessories you've added to it - and perhaps even again if you remove them.
	Another way your AR-15 can be impacted by a drop-in handguard is that it can change your barrel harmonics. Even though you cannot see it, your gun's barrel is actually flexible and it does move. The added weight of accessories on a drop-in handguard can cause a change in barrel harmonics, which can cause your shot groups to open up.
	Drop-In Handguards Have Their Place
	Make no mistake: <a href="https://www.deguns.net/handguards-and-rail-systems?q=drop-in">drop-in handguards</a> aren't bad. They definitely have their advantages. First and foremost, they can easily be removed without any tools. All you need to do is remove the spring pressure from the delta ring by pulling back on it and the two pieces of the drop-in handguard can be popped off.
	Once removed, you can easily swap out the factory handguard for one of your choice. In general, they're also less expensive than free-floating handguards.
	If you're looking for a budget AR-15 or you know you won't be adding accessories to the handguards, then there's no reason you can't use drop-in handguards and have a gun that shoots great.
	Why Not Both?
	Of course, variety is the spice of life, and if you can afford it, you should probably have at least two AR-15s in your possession - one with drop-in handguards and one with free-floating handguards. Why? Why not!

At minimum, 25 yards is recommended for optics with minimal or no zoom function, such as standard reflex sights,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gunmade.com/best-red-dot-sights-for-ar-15/">red dot sights</a>, and tactical scopes. <a href="https://www.deguns.net/rifle-scopes">Rifle scopes</a> with higher magnification should be sighted at 50 or more yards. You want to decide what distance you will most likely be using it. Don&rsquo;t worry, if you are wondering &ldquo;what if my shot is outside of that zero range?&rdquo;. It is completely possible to shoot outside of this designated zero if necessary by just lowering or raising the crosshair according to your ammunitions trajectory.
Each caliber will yield different trajectory characteristics that are necessary to know in assessing how much to raise or lower the reticule when firing at targets outside of your zero range, be they closer or further than that zero distance. For example, if you are zeroed at 50 yards and your bullet is still on its way up at 100 yards, you may need to lower your reticule a certain amount when aiming for targets at 100 yards. If it&rsquo;s on its way down at 200 yards, then you may need to raise your reticule when firing at targets that are 200 yards away. Again, it all depends on what your particular bullets are doing at a given range.
Secured Optic: Make darn sure that your scope or reflex sight is securely fastened to your firearm&rsquo;s rail. This is where the allen wrench comes into play. If your optics aren&rsquo;t secure, the recoil from your shots can move the position of the optic itself and/or the reticule ever so slightly, negating any fine tuning you have done up to that point. Understand that even the slightest change in reticule or optic position will yield a depreciating effect on accuracy that only intensifies at longer distances.
<h3>Step 2: Hitting the Paper Target</h3>
Whether your optic of choice is a rifle scope or <a href="https://www.deguns.net/firefield-impact-xlt-reflex-sight/p">reflex sight</a>, you need to obtain hits &ndash; any hits &ndash; on paper as a point of reference before you can begin fine tuning your zero. Simply put, you need visual confirmation of where your shots are hitting so that you can contrast these hits against what you see when you aim the reticule at the desired area of the target. Even simpler put, you can&rsquo;t correct a problem until you identify what&rsquo;s causing it.
When learning how to zero your optic or scope, you now need to take your first three shots at the paper. Be sure to aim your reticule as close as you can on the same spot every time. To clarify, shooting in groups ensures that shooter error has minimal effect on the zeroing process and that we can consistently hit a given target where we want to.
The practical test is that when three shots are fired while aiming at the same area of the target, they land relatively close together. Keep in mind that at this stage, it doesn&rsquo;t matter so much whether or not these shots land where your reticule is aimed, but rather that they are hitting the same area of the target. For example, if your reticule is aimed at the bottom right of the target, and all three shots are grouped together at the bottom left, we can be sure in our consistency and be confident that shooter error won&rsquo;t cause a problem when calculating the next adjustment.
Suffice it to say, if you hit the paper at all and you have tight groups, it&rsquo;s time to move to the next step in the zeroing process.
If you AREN&rsquo;T on the paper, then it&rsquo;s time to employ a boresighter to get on it. Understand that boresighters don&rsquo;t zero optics, but rather offer a starting point to get on paper so that the shooter may then zero in. Using a boresighter is simple. Attach it to your rifle, turn it on, and then line up your optic&rsquo;s reticule to the point generated by the boresighter. From there, you should be able to get on the paper.
<h3>Step 3: Fine Tuning Your Optics to Zero</h3>
Assuming that you are firing from a consistent range and are hitting the paper, it&rsquo;s time to fine tune your sights. All optics, regardless of make or model, come equipped with elevation and windage knobs, allowing precise control of the reticule&rsquo;s x and y axis. The elevation knob is responsible for adjusting the vertical position of the reticule, and the windage knob is responsible for adjusting the horizontal position of the reticule.
These knobs are &ldquo;stepped&rdquo;, meaning that with each click sound heard and/or felt as a knob is turned, predictable bullet movement is ensured. Previously, we suggested that you use targets with a .5&rdquo; grid pattern. This comes into play with the stepped knobs because with each step on a knob, a precise amount of bullet movement can be expected at a given range.
This is the point at which you should consult your optic&rsquo;s user manual to determine how many clicks it takes to move your shots a given amount at a given distance. Once you know how many clicks equal 1 or &frac12; inches of bullet movement for your particular optics at a given range, you can easily calculate how many clicks it will take to move your shots &ldquo;2 inches to the left and 6 inches up&rdquo;- or whatever is needed &ndash; using the .5&rdquo; grid background as your reference for calculation. Depending on your distance to target and your eyesight, a spotting scope may be needed to see the grid pattern well enough to make your calculations. At 50 yards or more, you will most definitely need one to make these judgments accurately.
For example, if a single click yields .5&rdquo; of bullet movement at a range of 50 yards, then moving shot placement 2&rdquo; down and 4&rdquo; to the right will take 4 clicks down and 8 clicks to the right.
Don&rsquo;t forget to fire your shots in groups of 3 each time in order to ensure consistency and accuracy in your adjustments.
